The History of LDMA

The Louisville Direct Marketing Association (LDMA) was started by an enthusiastic group of ten people interested in direct marketing under the leadership of Lucy R. Levis and the late E.A. Ford. The first meeting of the Louisville Direct Mail Association (as it was known then) was held on October 23, 1983 at Masterson's Restaurant. During the first year, LDMA signed up 89 members and held a luncheon meeting every month between September and May, with the exception of one, which was canceled due to weather.

The initial and continuous purpose of this non-profit organization is to educate in the field of direct marketing primarily through luncheons, seminars and member participation. In order to be thorough in the purpose, the word "Mail" was deleted from the organization's title in October 1984. This enabled LDMA to include telemarketing and direct response advertising in their educational spectrum. On March 12, 1985, a set of Bylaws was approved and adopted by the Board for the LDMA.

During the past 12 years many local and national direct marketing leaders have spoken at LDMA meetings. Some of these have included" "Pete" Hoke, Publisher of Direct Marketing Magazine; David Garvin, President of Camping World; Robert Delay - The Delay Letter; Ed Nash, President of Nash Direct; Jo-Von Tucker, President of Jo-Von Tucker & Associates; Andy Cohen, Direct Resources, Inc. and many more. Also, seminars have been a great source of more in-depth direct marketing knowledge for those attending. These seminars have included such subjects as printing, telemarketing, postal procedures, database marketing, catalog design, and many others.

A significant educational program was undertaken in 1988 by the LDMA. A course in direct marketing was developed with the University of Louisville School of Business and is funded with income raised by the LDMA through direct marketing to the business community. The course was initially offered in September 1996 with a strong Board of eight Directors, five Advisory Board members, and an outstanding agenda of luncheon speakers and seminars. LDMA is grateful to those of your who have supported this organization.

This organization needs your continuing support and welcomes your comments and ideas for change and growth. LDMA meetings are held on the third Tuesday of every month from September through May, unless otherwise noted.
